Dave Quigley, house chef for 11 years, received his “award” from the Second Street gang yesterday as he was unable to be with us last weekend. We figured Dave has flipped over 80,000 jonnycakes during his years at #92 and deserved recognition! Thanks Dave- for all you do for the guests. Dave arrives at 5 a.m. and the first smell of the morning is Dave’s coffee brewing- especially if you are sleeping in Abby and Andrew’s room. Kfactor Kristin was awarded the Lens of Sherlock (a gold magnifying lens on a chain) for excellence in detecting -being the first to find the school Emma attended, LeeAAnn and Donald, and Len Rebello were awarded the highest honor bestowed by the Irregulars, – The Golden Fleece- from the Mutton Eaters in recognition of their work in restoring the Borden barn and property, and in Len’s case, scholarly pursuit and publication of facts in the case and maintaining such a willingness to share his findings with us all. Dee, the cheery face which usually welcomes everyone in the gift shop was given our cordiality award- a very LARGE pear cookie jar filled with cookies. Laughing

Jonnycakes,(spelled without the “h”)  for the Uninitiated are an acquired taste and are mostly water, golden corn meal. egg,  and  oil.  These are a favorite in Rhode Island and parts of Massachusetts and are enhanced by butter and a little maple syrup.  These were served at the Borden table on the morning of August 4th along with mutton sliced cold and broth, sugar cookies, coffee and bread. Some say the breakfast was the motive for the murders! Jonnycakes is a corruption of “journey cakes” as they are so durable many house wives packed them in their husband’s saddle bags for a long journey. ABout 50% of the guests seem to enjoy them.

Pear Crumble

Posted in Potpourri, Yum Yum Yum on October 24, 2007 by administrator

pearcrumble.jpg One toothsome morsel being considered for the Nov. 9th meeting of the SSI’s is pear crumble- which maybe ought to be called “Alibi Crumble”.  No fruit in history has ever gotten so much attention, with maybe the exception of Eve’s Apple in the Garden of Eden, than Lizzie’s pear-eating escapades in that hayloft.  The bounty of pears has been harvested and market shelves are burgeoning with Anjou, Bosc, Bartlett, Seckels and other juicy gems of peardom. Next to mutton broth, the noble pear surely deserves its place at all gatherings of the Second Street Irregulars!

Pear Crumble

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
3 to 4 pears (5 cups), peeled, thinly sliced
Whipping cream or half-and-half, if desired
  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and cardamom in medium bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Layer pear slices evenly into ungreased 8-inch square baking pan. Spoon crumb mixture over pears.
  4. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until pears are tender and top is browned. Serve warm with whipping cream, if desired.

Makes 6 servings.

Neither wind nor rain deter the fearless Mutton Eaters

Yesterday’s howling winds and driving rain did not prevent the further adventures of the Mutton Eater’s Planning Team in the quest for finding a good place for lunch on November 10th.  There was also a stop at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven where the clammy mausoleum of the Delanos proved a little too creepy for even the stout-hearted Second Street Irregulars.  The foliage is at peak and the photo below is taken near Eli Bence’s plot on an avenue of magical, golden maple trees.  N.O.M.E. Sir Jeff is revelling in the leaves. Our venue for lunch will remain a Classified Top Secret!  Surprises are more fun.

Only in England- Renaissance Mutton?

Posted in All things Mutton, Yum Yum Yum on September 26, 2007 by administrator

fatsheep.jpg With a sheepish grin, HRH Prince Charles, Prince of Wales peers out from a campaign poster promoting the sale of aged sheep in a 2004 campaign to get mutton back on the plates of Englishmen!  Touting the benefits and virtues of ewes of a “certain age”, “Renaissance mutton is the meat from a traceable farm assured sheep that is at least two years of age has been finished on a forage based diet and matured for at least two weeks post slaughter.” Not to mention the benefits of “grooming Britain’s rural landscapes”.

It’s good to know we are not getting older and undesirable- we are becoming merely fodder for a ”renaissance”- or as one ewe says to another, “Ewe’s not fat, ewe’s just fluffy!” This link must be seen to be believed  http://www.muttonrenaissance.org.uk/ What next? - a return to mutton chop sidewhiskers and leg o’ mutton sleeves?

Lizzie’s Turncoat Friend

Alice Russell is one of the few major players in the Borden drama who is not buried at Oak Grove, and that being the case, she is rarely “visited” out in Westport at Beech Grove Cemetery.  Beech Grove is not the easiest place to find either.  So, on our way to Fairhaven, we will be detouring to 1. Colonial Bakery which has the most divine creampuffs on the planet and memorable cinnamon cider doughnuts too, and 2.  Beech Grove Cemetery to say a few words and leave a posy for good old Alice Russell, who in the end “came clean” and blew the whistle about that dress Lizzie burned in the stove on the day after the funeral.  Alice must have seen plenty during her stay in the Borden house during the days after the murder, not to mention being the recipient of Lizzie’s tale of poison and impending doom the night before the slaughter on Second Street.

After the trial, Lizzie cut her old pal loose.  Alice had lived in the Kelly house, on Borden Street, and also at the corner of Prospect and Hillside in the Highlands-not far from Maplecroft.  Funny to think about Lizzie walking right by her old friend and giving her the cold shoulder. So, the Mutton Eaters will give Alice a tribute and a salute for telling the truth in the end as we visit her former abodes and final resting place.

Chourico Pizza and Chow Mein Sandwiches

Dear Future Muttoneaters!  After a drismal rainy weekend which ended up in dazzling sunshine, some preliminary sampling of Fall River cuisine was managed, in anticipation of the November 9th arrival.  Some Hearty Muttoneaters can’t wait until Friday, and will arrive on the 8th to get things stirred up before the big day.  Should mutton not be enough to satisfy, chourico pizza may prove a toothsome midnight snack.  The versatile Portuguese sausage is an equal opportunity meat, scrambling nicely with morning eggs, saucing it up with afternoon “grinders” and surprisingly, topping cheese pizza with an unexpected taste which just might make pepperoni obsolete.  So, for your gustatory experience, chourico will be added to the dining delight come November 9th.  As you can see, the quilts are airing on Mrs. Churchill’s fence, and all is in rabid preparation for the Coming of the Second Street Irregulars!
