We’re Kicking Up Our Hooves in April!

Spring Lamb

April 16-18 2010  will mark the fourth annual gathering of the Second St. Irregulars Mutton Eaters.

As to itinerary, Friday we will be investigating the city of Taunton for our early adventure followed by our annual banquet Friday evening at White’s Restaurant Presidential Room. Saturday will bring a very indepth tour of Fall River, a visit to the Fall River Room at the library, city cemeteries, and a tour of Borden-related houses still standing in the city. Saturday night we will be having our usual Open House for LB Society members and the first Hyman Lubinsky Ice Cream Social with 1890′s music. There will be visits to our usual Victorian Venue of course.  Also, we will have our “Call for Papers” and will hope several of you will again present research projects you will be doing over the Fall and Winter. Some of our recent endeavors will be published on Warps and Wefts very soon.

Naturally there are one or two surprises in store !

Victorian Christmas on The Hill

christmas_fr.jpg  Once again the Fall River Preservation Society will be presenting a holiday house stroll featuring the beautiful “Painted Ladies” of The Hill section of the city and the Borden home on Second Street.  Last year was such a success with hayrides, carollers, refreshments and the Historical Society’s annual Christmas display at the Rock and Maple Street corner, this year’s tour of the stately homes, filled with antiques and holiday decorations, promises to exceed all expectations. The Second Street Irregulars will be attending, as many as can in costume, for a glimpse of the Past, history, architecture, good company and great food.

The Countdown Begins

holmesanimated.gif It was a busy weekend as N.O.M.E. Cemetery Jeff and I timed out our program for the two days and sampled various cuisine at our watering hole stops along the way.  The results will remain a surprise which will please.  We also had a look around Riverside and got a wee bit spooked by the creepy hollow sounds swirling in the old Delano mausoleum! The foliage was at peak as you can see and we both hope there will be some leaves left for the 9th.

Some Mutton Eaters have asked if they may “come in costume”, either Victorian garb or “Sherlockian” get-up.  By all means!  As long as the shoes are comfortable. We are on the prowl a great deal both days, but will also enjoy some lounging and social time at the house and a lovely dinner in a private diningroom in the city (with a few fun surprises). Further details will be sent by secret courier on Monday :-) as to times and events, and well some things will be simply left mysteriously unknown until the hour arrives!

The May 23-24 meeting of the SSI’s is already going full throttle and at this point, the house is full.  Details of B&B’s in Fairhaven and Westport will soon be posted as well as hotels and inns.  With 2 full days and 2 nights available, the Mutton Eaters will be adventuring far and wide.

 Fellow Mutton Eaters!

What a great weekend full of unexpected surprises. N.O.M.E. Lady Barbara popped in at #92 and we had a fine time trying on capes and deerstalkers and planning for the 9th. On Friday some of the “flock” went to Fairhaven for a dry run of venues there and were treated to a preview of the town hall.  We also visited Riverside Cemetery and New Bedford.  Today at 2 p.m. there will be a great October tour of Riverside Cemetery by local historian, Sandy Main.  N.O.M.E. Sir Jeffrey is hoping to attend and tell us about that.  We are about four weeks away from our first official gathering.  Details of times and places will be sent to all of you, along with your secret decoder ring, by carrier pigeon very soon !

The Well-Dressed Sleuth

Just back from “tailing a suspect” to tropical climes, which demands much in the way of endurance and cotton attire.  The Mutton Eaters will be convening during deliciously cool New England November days when the frost is on the pumpkin, plumes of woodsmoke drift from chimney pots on the roof, and the crunch of dry leaves is heard underfoot.  The pressing question, naturally is, what to wear for an all-day caper?  One might suggest a sheepskin coat of course, in true Mutton Eater fashion, but a heavy wooly cardigan, gloves, and sensible shoes will fill the bill.  There will be much huffing and puffing across the moors, various cemeteries, and the like- as well as pauses for refreshment at local pubs and eateries.  Should you wish to pay tribute to the garb of The Master- well, deerstalkers and Inverness capes are to be had.  An Inverness is actually a longish coat without sleeves.  The cape is attached and falls over the arms, and is usually made up in a Harris tweed or some sort of woolen fabric which wears like iron.  The price tag online is not for the faint-hearted.  A proper Inverness cape can cost from 600-800 dollars!     The very best come, of course, -from Scotland.  As for the earflapped deerstalker hats, a variety of qualities are on the market and on Ebay.  For as little as 18 dollars, a replica deerstalker may be found online.  One does get what one pays for however, so be warned the quality may not be all that is desired and the cheaper versions tend to run very small.  Below is a good link for an English shop which for about $20.00 offers a great deerstalker hat in sized and three patterns of wool check.  Magnifying lens, walking stick and violin optional accessories!

Holmes would have been every bit as clever in a “hoodie” and Nikes :-)

William Gillette- The Man Who Made Deerstalkers Look Good

Posted in Meeting Schedule, Preview of Coming Adventures, The Game's Afoot on September 13, 2007 by administrator

gillette.jpg The curved pipe, deerstalker cap and Inverness cape were not the invention of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.  Sidney Paget, the illustrator for The Strand magazine which first published the Sherlock Holmes stories, concocted the pipe and cap, but it was American actor, William Gillette who made these props famous.

Mr. Gillette was a big star of the late Victorian stage, under the wing of the legendary Charles Frohman who managed the careers of many famous actors such as Maude Adams, Billie Burke, John Drew, Ethel Barrymore, Nat Goodwin, George du Maurier, Marie Tempest, Seymour Hicks, and Ellaline Terris, to name but a few.  Frohman would die in 1915 in the sinking of the Lusitania, quoting Barrie as the ship was going down in lines from Peter Pan – “Why fear death? It is the most beautiful adventure in life.”

A proposed field trip for the spring or summer meeting is Gillette’s Castle- a bizarre construction of Gillette’s own design which was finished in 1919.  The castle overlooks the Connecticut River in East Haddam, and can be reached by a ride on an old steam train from Essex station.  Even Conan Doyle would approve!  http://www.essexsteamtrain.com/gillette.html
