 Jill Dalton As: Lizzie Borden

Winner Jacoby Award:

MOST OUTSTANDING PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS

“The nod goes to Jill Dalton for her Lizzie Borden in “Lizzie Borden Live.” She runs the gamut of emotions in her performance from that of a mild Christian woman to a ruthless murderer. Her reenactment of the murder of her mother (it was my stepmother!) and father is a chilling scene in this play and Dalton, who also wrote the script, vividly brings it to the audience.”

Jacob Schaad Jr., The Cape May Gazette

Dalton is nothing less than superb in her depiction of the character, as her Lizzie is alternating sweet, innocent, witty and savagely murderous. The audience is left to decide which Lizzie is the real one.”   Cape May Star Wave

“I heartily recommend you see Lizzie Borden Live. . . . complex and most interesting Lizzie, in the person of Jill Dalton.

Cape May Star Wave

“Absorbing performance . . . Dalton runs the gamut of emotions from supposedly mild Christian woman to that of a ruthless murderer.”

Cape May Gazette

“Everything from Jill’s facial features (like Lizzie herself) to the way her voice can change throughout the play makes for compelling and oddly sympathetic viewing.”   Exit Zero

“Truly superb . . . the script is fascinating. Jill Dalton is an astonishingly talented actress – she changes her mood and characters in a split second. The play should get a Pulitzer.”

Charles Alexander, writer for Time Magazine

Lizzie Borden Live was originally commissioned by: East Lynn Theater Company, Cape May, NJ

Extra seating is being added on today as a result of a blizzard of news coverage and radio interviews for the play written and starring Jill Dalton.  The old Eagle restaurant has been beautifully converted for the occasion and a flock of Mutton Eaters will descend to be on hand to meet and greet playgoers in the lobby.  Dr. Dolan has a new derby hat for the occasion and Mrs. Borden will be circulating with a tray of hors d’oeuvres and tips for flaky pie crust!  Alice Russell, Bridget Sullivan, Emma Borden and Mrs. Churchill will have something to say about everything, and undertaker, Mr. Winward will be glancing over the crowd for prospective future business! Best news of all- Miss Lizzie Borden Live  will be returning in August- that all-important month!!

The flock is gearing up for a big weekend in Fall River when Jill Dalton’s Lizzie Borden Live comes to town at the former Eagle Restaurant.  On Saturday trolleys will make a circuit of restaurant stops for guests dining out prior to the 8 p.m. curtain for the play.  The Noble Order of Mutton Eaters will be on hand in various character roles and costume, to welcome and chitchat with guests, man the trolleys, and to pose artistically at #92 Second Street.  What fun for all of us! – Read about it here  http://www.heraldnews.com/news/x2122537493/Mutton-Eaters-have-a-taste-for-history

Just today an email arrived from our old friend Pilar at the Abbey Grille to tell us we could no longer have our annual banquet there as the building is in foreclosure! The prospects are hopeless for a reprieve and sadly Lizzie’s former Central Congregational church is in peril.  We have many wonderful memories there and all our best wishes to Chef George and the incredible staff!  We will miss you.

New Images of the Bordens Found in Swansea

Posted in In the News, Places to Go, Potpourri, What's New on February 11, 2008 by administrator

2008 has begun with a bang with the discovery of unpublished images of Lizzie, Emma, the first Mrs. Borden, and Uncle John Morse. Borden case author Len Rebello, and editor of the Hatchet, Stefani Koorey, unearthed this treasure trove at Luther’s Corners museum, headquarters of the Swansea Historical Society.  The new issue of The Hatchet, which came out on Saturday, previews the new images as well as photos of some Borden family books and ephemera which was also found at the museum.  The previous issue of The Hatchet featured an unpublished portrait of Andrew Borden.  The new Lizzie portrait may be seen at this link  http://lizzieandrewborden.com/MondoLizzie/ The Second Street Irregulars will be visiting the museum as part of the activities of the upcoming Spring meeting.

Jack the Ripper conference this month

ripper.jpg

Lizzie Borden has been sometimes called “America’s Jack the Ripper”.  The crimes of the real Ripper, only a few years before the Borden crime, are remembered by a group in the U.K. at an annual convention.  This year the convention is in Wolverhampton at what was the old Royal Victoria Hotel. Don’t you wish we could go! The event is coming up October 12-14th -I hope there will be plenty of photos at the site.  http://www.ripperconference.co.uk/
