More Mutton Eaters in the News

Posted in All things Mutton, Around Town, Lights! Action! Rolling!, Places to Go, Potpourri, Preview of Coming Adventures, The Game's Afoot on June 17, 2009 by administrator

A third article by Herald’s Mark Dion has appeared in the paper today on the topic of the Mutton Eaters’ debut in the city at Lizzie Borden Live.

“To that end, appetizers and a cash bar will be available and, to help playgoers get into the proper mind set, the event will be enlivened by members of The Mutton Eaters, a shadowy group of enthusiasts who know their roles.

“We’ll have the Mutton Eaters there to interact with the audience,” Cabral said, explaining that, as you sip a cocktail before the show, you may be approached by a woman in authentic 19th century dress, a woman who claims to be Emma Borden. Listen to her. She’ll tell you who she is and she’ll tell you some interesting things about what did or didn’t happen on that morning. There will be other costumed players about, too, all with information to impart.”

We’re up to the challenge!

The flock is gearing up for a big weekend in Fall River when Jill Dalton’s Lizzie Borden Live comes to town at the former Eagle Restaurant.  On Saturday trolleys will make a circuit of restaurant stops for guests dining out prior to the 8 p.m. curtain for the play.  The Noble Order of Mutton Eaters will be on hand in various character roles and costume, to welcome and chitchat with guests, man the trolleys, and to pose artistically at #92 Second Street.  What fun for all of us! – Read about it here  http://www.heraldnews.com/news/x2122537493/Mutton-Eaters-have-a-taste-for-history

The Official Mutton Eater Song

singsheepSung to the tune of the Whiffenpoof Song

To the tables down at Rogers’
To the place where Lizzie dwells
To the dear old Second Street we love so well
Sing the Mutton Eaters assembled with their glasses raised on high
And the magic of their singing casts its spell

Yes, the magic of their singing of the songs we love so well
“Can’t chop your Poppa Up” ,”Took an Axe” and all the rest
We will serenade our Lenny while life and voice shall last
Then we’ll pass and be forgotten with the rest

We’re poor little lambs who have lost our way
Baa, baa, baa
We’re little black sheep who have gone astray
Baa, baa, baa

Mutton Eaters, songsters, - off on a spree
Doomed from here to eternity
God have mercy on such as we
Baa, baa, baa

The Whiffenpoof Song”is based on a tune written by Tod Galloway (Amherst 1895) and adapted with lyrics by Meade Minnigerode (Yale 1910).

The word “whiffenpoof” originated in the 1908 opera Little Nemo by Victor Herbert, based on the comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay.

The Whiffenpoofs have performed for generations at a number of venues, including Lincoln Center, the White House, the Salt Lake Tabernacle, Oakland Coliseum, Carnegie Hall and the Rose Bowl. The group has also appeared on television shows such as Jeopardy!, The Today Show, Saturday Night Live, 60 Minutes, Gilmore Girls and The West Wing.

Throughout the school year, the Whiffenpoofs traditionally perform Monday nights at Mory’s, known more formally as “Mory’s Temple Bar,” circulating from room to room singing.

The Whiffs’ best-known alumnus may be Cole Porter, who sang in the 1913 lineup of the Whiffenpoofs when he was a student at Yale. Today the group often performs Porter songs in tribute.

The Whiffenpoofs donate part of their proceeds each year to the Whiffenpoof Children’s Literacy Initiative, which aims to create 15 literacy centers in 12 countries, including the U.S. They travel extensively during the school year and take a three-month world tour during the summer. At one time most members were full-time students, but today many members take all or part of the year off and are effectively full-time professional Whiffenpoofs. (Wikipedia)

Just today an email arrived from our old friend Pilar at the Abbey Grille to tell us we could no longer have our annual banquet there as the building is in foreclosure! The prospects are hopeless for a reprieve and sadly Lizzie’s former Central Congregational church is in peril.  We have many wonderful memories there and all our best wishes to Chef George and the incredible staff!  We will miss you.

The first meeting of the new Second Street Irregulars went without a hitch this past weekend and all the flock has returned to the “pen” tired but happy.  It was a weekend of learning and laughing, “grazing” and kicking up our hooves, with many people to thank for enriching our program:  Deputy Chief Ralph Tavares is high on our list, providing the most comprehensive and enjoyable tour of “Lizzie’s” New Bedford Courthouse, Len Rebello for an amazingly detailed and instructive city walk around Fall River, Fairhaven Tourism Director, Chris Richards for an entertaining walking tour and peep into Victorian Fairhaven structures and commentary about Fairhaven citizens of note, The Abbey Grill staff for a surprise night time tour of Lizzie’s Congregational Rock Street church, White’s Restaurant, Westport, Pumpernickel’s, Fairhaven, and the owners and staff of the Lizzie Borden Bed and Breakfast for making our weekend possible.  Photos and “Sheep Tails/Tales of the weekend events will be posted here and also at the Lizzie Borden Society forum gathering thread at http://lizzieandrewborden.com/LBForum/viewtopic.php?t=3006&start=75

Thanks to all who made the long journey to join us- and let’s see some of those photos and video!

Victorian Christmas on The Hill

Posted in #92, Around Town, Borden Places and Spaces, Meeting Schedule, Member News, Places to Go, Potpourri, Preview of Coming Adventures on November 1, 2007 by administrator

christmas_fr.jpg  Once again the Fall River Preservation Society will be presenting a holiday house stroll featuring the beautiful “Painted Ladies” of The Hill section of the city and the Borden home on Second Street.  Last year was such a success with hayrides, carollers, refreshments and the Historical Society’s annual Christmas display at the Rock and Maple Street corner, this year’s tour of the stately homes, filled with antiques and holiday decorations, promises to exceed all expectations. The Second Street Irregulars will be attending, as many as can in costume, for a glimpse of the Past, history, architecture, good company and great food.

Sir Jeff just could not resist “worshipping” at the spot of the old Ferry Street house where Lizzie “began”!

Neither wind nor rain deter the fearless Mutton Eaters

Yesterday’s howling winds and driving rain did not prevent the further adventures of the Mutton Eater’s Planning Team in the quest for finding a good place for lunch on November 10th.  There was also a stop at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven where the clammy mausoleum of the Delanos proved a little too creepy for even the stout-hearted Second Street Irregulars.  The foliage is at peak and the photo below is taken near Eli Bence’s plot on an avenue of magical, golden maple trees.  N.O.M.E. Sir Jeff is revelling in the leaves. Our venue for lunch will remain a Classified Top Secret!  Surprises are more fun.
