Pear Crumble

Posted in Potpourri, Yum Yum Yum on October 24, 2007 by administrator

pearcrumble.jpg One toothsome morsel being considered for the Nov. 9th meeting of the SSI’s is pear crumble- which maybe ought to be called “Alibi Crumble”.  No fruit in history has ever gotten so much attention, with maybe the exception of Eve’s Apple in the Garden of Eden, than Lizzie’s pear-eating escapades in that hayloft.  The bounty of pears has been harvested and market shelves are burgeoning with Anjou, Bosc, Bartlett, Seckels and other juicy gems of peardom. Next to mutton broth, the noble pear surely deserves its place at all gatherings of the Second Street Irregulars!

Pear Crumble

3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
6 tablespoons butter or margarine, softened
3 to 4 pears (5 cups), peeled, thinly sliced
Whipping cream or half-and-half, if desired
  1. Heat oven to 350°F.
  2. Combine flour, brown sugar, cinnamon and cardamom in medium bowl; cut in butter with pastry blender or fork until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Layer pear slices evenly into ungreased 8-inch square baking pan. Spoon crumb mixture over pears.
  4. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes or until pears are tender and top is browned. Serve warm with whipping cream, if desired.

Makes 6 servings.

Sir Jeff just could not resist “worshipping” at the spot of the old Ferry Street house where Lizzie “began”!

The Countdown Begins

holmesanimated.gif It was a busy weekend as N.O.M.E. Cemetery Jeff and I timed out our program for the two days and sampled various cuisine at our watering hole stops along the way.  The results will remain a surprise which will please.  We also had a look around Riverside and got a wee bit spooked by the creepy hollow sounds swirling in the old Delano mausoleum! The foliage was at peak as you can see and we both hope there will be some leaves left for the 9th.

Some Mutton Eaters have asked if they may “come in costume”, either Victorian garb or “Sherlockian” get-up.  By all means!  As long as the shoes are comfortable. We are on the prowl a great deal both days, but will also enjoy some lounging and social time at the house and a lovely dinner in a private diningroom in the city (with a few fun surprises). Further details will be sent by secret courier on Monday :-) as to times and events, and well some things will be simply left mysteriously unknown until the hour arrives!

The May 23-24 meeting of the SSI’s is already going full throttle and at this point, the house is full.  Details of B&B’s in Fairhaven and Westport will soon be posted as well as hotels and inns.  With 2 full days and 2 nights available, the Mutton Eaters will be adventuring far and wide.

Neither wind nor rain deter the fearless Mutton Eaters

Yesterday’s howling winds and driving rain did not prevent the further adventures of the Mutton Eater’s Planning Team in the quest for finding a good place for lunch on November 10th.  There was also a stop at Riverside Cemetery in Fairhaven where the clammy mausoleum of the Delanos proved a little too creepy for even the stout-hearted Second Street Irregulars.  The foliage is at peak and the photo below is taken near Eli Bence’s plot on an avenue of magical, golden maple trees.  N.O.M.E. Sir Jeff is revelling in the leaves. Our venue for lunch will remain a Classified Top Secret!  Surprises are more fun.

Songs around the sittingroom fire?

Posted in All things Mutton, Member News, Preview of Coming Adventures on October 16, 2007 by administrator

sing.jpg Over at the forum some Lizzie folks have come up with some ideas for The Mutton Eater’s theme song.  There will probably be a rousing chorus of “You Can’t Chop Your Poppa Up”.

The Whiffenpoo song has been suggested as well as:

It had to be Ewe, ewe.gif  Ewe are so beautiful,  Mutton From Mutton Leaves Mutton, Ewe-nited We Stand, Wooley Bully and-

Oh baby – you love of my life,
Let me tell you one thing that be true:
If it’s cold or if it’s hot
(Don’t really matter what we got)
I can’t sheep at night without Ewweeee!

and

Who put the RAM in the RAM MA LAMB A dingdong, and of course,

Baa Baa Baa Ba Barbara Ann

What would a society be without a song, a secret handshake and a corporate seal?

baa_sheep_203x152.gif  Brrrrr. . . .it’s time for the woolies in Massachusetts. This weekend was a “dry run” for the 9th of November.  Pack your longjohns as it is plenty nippy on the waterfront in Fairhaven and Fall River- and a flannel nightie may be the order of the night too!  Now if only the snow holds off, the flock will set off to the world’s best hot “chowdah” ( instead of mutton broth) in fine style.  25 days and counting fellow  Mutton Eaters!  Good news about the 23-24 of May weekend- Lizzie and Emma and Abby and Andrew rooms are still available.  We will have drop-ins for tours and evening adventures as well as overnighters at the house.

Weather permitting on the 9th- we will attempt to time the eating of 4 pears in the hayloft, and test out just how long it would have taken Uncle John to “hoof it” to Weybosset Street- what ? – you thought it would be ALL lounging around?

“Cemetery Jeff”

This past weekend Sir Jeffrey and I began to map out our visit to Oak Grove and stopped for a pose by Andrew’s last client,  Mr. Clegg.  You will recall how Mr. Clegg stopped Andrew near the Granite Block and inquired about his window on the morning of the 4th.  The last thing Andrew did before going home to his death was to stop and check the window on the South Main Street building- doing business till the end!

 Fellow Mutton Eaters!

What a great weekend full of unexpected surprises. N.O.M.E. Lady Barbara popped in at #92 and we had a fine time trying on capes and deerstalkers and planning for the 9th. On Friday some of the “flock” went to Fairhaven for a dry run of venues there and were treated to a preview of the town hall.  We also visited Riverside Cemetery and New Bedford.  Today at 2 p.m. there will be a great October tour of Riverside Cemetery by local historian, Sandy Main.  N.O.M.E. Sir Jeffrey is hoping to attend and tell us about that.  We are about four weeks away from our first official gathering.  Details of times and places will be sent to all of you, along with your secret decoder ring, by carrier pigeon very soon !
