It’s good to be, uh… irregular!

Posted in Baker Street Irregulars on September 13, 2007 by administrator

urchin.jpg About the only time it is good to be “irregular”is when it has to do with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and his super sleuth, Sherlock Holmes. Holmes, from time to time, would employ the services of the street urchins, from London’s lower rungs of society to perform small but important tasks in his quest to unravel the deepest mysteries . This little impromptu brigade became known as the “Baker Street Irregulars”, and were praised by the Master Holmes himself, - for every person, even a child, can be sharp, observant and useful – and indispensible in helping to solve a crime.

Watson first encountered the Irregulars in A Study in Scarlet, describing them as “six dirty little scoundrels [who] stood in line like so many disreptuable statuettes.” Their chief was the energetic and inventive Wiggins. Holmes said to Watson about them: “There’s more work to be gotten out of one of those little beggars than out of a dozen of the force…The mere sight of an official looking person seals men’s lips. These youngsters, however, go everywhere and hear everything. They are as sharp as needles, too; all they want is organization.”
The original Second Street Irregulars also began with six “urchins” in 1993, borrowing their title from Conan Doyle’s little sleuths. And so, the new band of Second Street Irregulars can take a page, literally from their book!

Mmm..mmm good!

The Mutton Eaters

The Fall River Second Street Irregulars chapter, The Muttoneaters, has selected as their motto “We can’t do anything in a minute!” – inspired by the immortal words of Lizzie Borden when she was asked how long it took to eat those famous pears in the hayloft.

lbostonbull.jpg Naturally the official publication is The Hatchet http://hatchetonline.com/HatchetOnline/ and our mascot is the devoted Boston Bull terrier, much beloved by Lizzie herself.  Hopefully one of our talented members will design a coat of arms for the chapter soon.

Mutton was served several days running in the Borden house, including the day of the crime- and there are those who would say jokingly it was the motive for murder.  The jury is out on mutton broth just at the moment, although samples will be available for taste testing on November 9th.  The results to be published here later on!

Introducing The Second Street Irregulars

Posted in The Game's Afoot on September 12, 2007 by administrator

edhat.jpg In 1993, a small group of Fall Riverites gathered in the livingroom of Lizzie Borden historian, Ed Thibaut to discuss their favorite Victorian crime.  At this time, the scene of the crime, #92 Second Street was not open to the public as a B&B.  This group had met, for the most part, at the 1992 Lizzie Borden Centennial which was hosted by the Bristol Community College under the auspices of Jules Rykebusch.  After the convention, some Bordenphiles wanted to continue their fascination with the case with the formation of a social group which met regularly to discuss the case, formulate theories, and carry out experiments-thus the Second Street Irregulars came into being.

Over the years, some of the original six have kept in touch, some work at the house on #92, and alas, a few have gone missing.  Thanks to computer technology, “the game is afoot” once again and the informal society is trying to rekindle the fun with a meeting on November 9th at the Second Street House, the official “headquarters” for the group.  This  meeting is convening for the Lizzie Borden Forum members (the Mutton Eaters scion) http://lizzieandrewborden.com/LBForum/index.php and will offer field trips to Oak Grove Cemetery, Fairhaven and New Bedford, Andrew’s Last Walk, and other Lizzie sites around town.  Photos and updates for all Second Street Irregulars meetings will be posted here, as well as comments from members and visitors to the site.
